1. Introduction
Podium slabs are structural decks above basements/parking levels that support landscapes (softscapes) or traffic/paving (hardscapes). They are subject to dynamic loads, thermal cycling, water ponding, and root penetration.
Exposures:
- Hardscape Podiums → Vehicular/pedestrian traffic, abrasion, heavy dynamic load.
- Softscape Podiums → Planters, irrigation, root growth, long-term wetness.
Note: Cementitious coatings are not recommended for podiums due to rigidity and a history of failures under stress and thermal movement.
2. Recommended Systems
Based on evaluations, the following technologies are suitable for podiums:
Technology | Sub Type | Application | Use Case | Performance Notes | Read More |
1K PU (Moisture Cure) | Brush/Roller | Balconies, small podium areas | Easy to apply; high elongation (>400%); sensitive to substrate moisture | Polyurethane Membranes
2K Polyurethane | Polyurethane Membranes
Hand Applied | Roller/Trowel | Medium podiums, planters, Multiple Pedestals | Robust; tensile >4 MPa; needs mixing discipline | Polyurethane Membranes
Spray Applied | Plural-component Spray | Large podiums, hardscape/softscape mix, Faster executions | Seamless, crack bridging ≥2 mm; fast coverage | Polyurethane Membranes · Polyurea Membranes
Polyurea | Hybrid | Spray | High-load podiums, vehicular decks | Extremely durable; fast cure; requires specialist spray. Very high tensile (10–15 MPa), abrasion resistant | Polyurea Membranes |
Decision Guide
- High-load or vehicular podiums → Specify polyurea spray system with documented adhesion and DFT logs.
- Medium podiums with complex detailing → 2K hand-applied PU; spray-applied PU for speed on large areas.
- Balconies and small podium zones → 1K PU, protected as required.
- Avoid rigid cementitious systems as primary waterproofing on podiums due to movement and traffic.
