1. Introduction
Terraces are critical waterproofing zones exposed to direct sunlight, rain, thermal cycling, foot traffic, and sometimes even green roofs or swimming pools. Unlike basements, terraces are fully exposed to atmospheric stresses and require higher performance membranes than internal wet areas.
The right waterproofing choice depends on:
- Size of the terrace (small domestic vs. large podium-like).
- Usage (bare, tiled, landscaped, or with a pool).
- Traffic load (residential access vs. maintenance-only vs. heavy public use).
- Climate exposure (monsoons, UV load, freeze–thaw in colder zones).
2. Key Exposures & Risks
- UV radiation & heat → causes cracking in low-grade membranes.
- Thermal expansion/contraction → stresses at joints and upstands.
- Ponding water → needs hydrostatic resistance.
- Foot traffic & maintenance load → requires abrasion resistance.
- Special loads → swimming pools, green roofs, terrace gardens → high stress.
3. Terrace Waterproofing – Master Guide by Size & Type
1. Small Terraces (≤200 m²)
Technology | Type | Elongation / Strength | Application | Protection / Finish | Use Case | Read More |
Cementitious 2K (Std.) | Flexible 2K | >80% | Brush/Roller | Always under screed + tiles | Small domestic terraces, bathrooms, balconies | Cementitious Membrane |
2. Medium Terraces (200-2000 m² )
Technology | Type | Elongation / Strength | Application | Protection / Finish | Use Case | Read More |
Pure PU (1K Hand Applied) | Moisture cured PU | > 400% | Brush/Roller | Under screed | Covered moderate to large terraces | Polyurethane Membranes |
Pure PU (2K Hand-applied) | Elastomeric PU | 400–600% | Roller/Trowel | UV topcoat if exposed | Medium terraces with moderate foot traffic | Polyurethane Membranes |
3. Large Terraces (>2000 m² )
Technology | Type | Elongation / Strength | Application | Protection / Finish | Use Case | Read More |
Polyurethane (2K Spray-applied) | Seamless elastomeric PU | 600–800% | Spray machine | UV topcoat if exposed | Large terraces, podiums, fast execution, trafficable | Polyurethane Membranes |
Polyurea (2K Spray-applied) | Ultra-fast curing elastomer | >600% | Spray machine | UV topcoat if exposed | Heavy-duty podiums, swimming pool decks, green roofs | Polyurea Membranes |
4. Special Loads (Pools / Gardens / Green Roofs)
Technology | Type | Elongation / Strength | Application | Protection / Finish | Use Case | Read More |
Pre-formed Membranes (TPO / PVC) | Loose-laid / Heat weld | >400% | Heat weld | Exposed or overlaid | Old / weak terrace substrates, retrofits | TPO Membranes · PVC Sheet Membrane Waterproofing |
Polyurethane (2K Spray-applied) | Seamless elastomeric PU | 600–800% | Spray machine | UV topcoat if exposed | Green roofs, terrace gardens | Polyurethane Membranes |
HDPE Pre-applied Membrane | Fully bonded | >400% | Pre-applied | Below slab + screed | With swimming pools or water bodies | HDPE Membrane Waterproofing |
2K Cementitious (inside pool) | Flexible 2K | >80% | Brush/Roller | Always under screed + tiles | Swimming pools integrated with terrace decks | Cementitious Membrane |
- ≤200 m² (Small): Cementitious 2K (under tiles) OR 1K Pitch-Modified PU (better flexibility).
- 200–2000 m² (Medium): 1K PU or 2K Hand-applied PU (better elasticity & traffic resistance).
- >2000 m² (Large/Podium): 2K Spray PU or Polyurea (seamless, rapid, heavy-duty).
- Special (Pools/Gardens/Retrofits): Polyurethanes or Pre-formed membranes (TPO/HDPE).
