1. Introduction

Terraces are critical waterproofing zones exposed to direct sunlight, rain, thermal cycling, foot traffic, and sometimes even green roofs or swimming pools. Unlike basements, terraces are fully exposed to atmospheric stresses and require higher performance membranes than internal wet areas.

The right waterproofing choice depends on:

  • Size of the terrace (small domestic vs. large podium-like).
  • Usage (bare, tiled, landscaped, or with a pool).
  • Traffic load (residential access vs. maintenance-only vs. heavy public use).
  • Climate exposure (monsoons, UV load, freeze–thaw in colder zones).

2. Key Exposures & Risks

  • UV radiation & heat → causes cracking in low-grade membranes.
  • Thermal expansion/contraction → stresses at joints and upstands.
  • Ponding water → needs hydrostatic resistance.
  • Foot traffic & maintenance load → requires abrasion resistance.
  • Special loads → swimming pools, green roofs, terrace gardens → high stress.

Cementitious Membrane
  • ≤200 m² (Small): Cementitious 2K (under tiles) OR 1K Pitch-Modified PU (better flexibility).
  • 200–2000 m² (Medium): 1K PU or 2K Hand-applied PU (better elasticity & traffic resistance).
  • >2000 m² (Large/Podium): 2K Spray PU or Polyurea (seamless, rapid, heavy-duty).
  • Special (Pools/Gardens/Retrofits): Polyurethanes or Pre-formed membranes (TPO/HDPE).
