Expansion Joint

Expansion Joint

Design Width

≥30–40 mm

Function

Accommodates expansion due to temperature rise or shrinkage reversal

Material

PU sealant, FPO tape, aluminum cover

Movement

Large movement

Typical Application Detail

Roofs, podiums

Typical Locations

Bridges, large podiums, slabs >20 m length

Waterproofing Approach

Flexible sealant + backer rod + tape or metal cover

1. Introduction

Expansion joints are designed to absorb movement caused by thermal expansion and contraction, structural loading, and dynamic vibration.

Without proper treatment, these joints crack, leak, and cause failure in adjoining structural elements like podium slabs, bridges, and roofs.

2. Common Failures

  • Missing or undersized joint gap (insufficient design movement).
  • Rigid filling instead of flexible sealant or tape.
  • No bond breaker or backer rod (3-side adhesion).
  • Sealant debonding due to poor priming or UV exposure.
  • Water stagnation or damaged expansion cover flashing.

3. System Requirements

  • Flexible, UV-stable, watertight system accommodating ±25–50% movement.
  • Two-side adhesion, one-side free.
  • Durability against water, chemical exposure, and vibration.
  • Compatibility with adjacent waterproofing membranes.

4. Recommended Systems

Joint Width
System Type
Material Options
6–25 mm
PU / polysulphide sealant with backer rod
PU Sealant, Primer
25–40 mm
FPO / TPE joint tape bonded with epoxy adhesive
FPO Tape, PU Adhesive
>40 mm
Expansion joint profile or aluminum cover plate
Metal Cover, Butyl Strip

5. Methodology

  1. Clean and grind joint edges.
  2. Apply primer on both sides.
  3. Insert backer rod to control depth.
  4. Fix bond breaker on the third side (if required).
  5. Apply sealant / adhere tape centrally ensuring proper tension.
  6. Finish with neat concave profile.
  7. Allow full cure before water exposure.
